It might not seem like it yet, but summer is on its way. Are you ready for it? How’s your air conditioner doing? A lot of people wonder about air conditioner repair. Does my AC unit need to be fixed? How often should an air conditioner need repairs? Is it time to think about replacement instead? We’ve got the answers!

This is an image on one side of an HVAC technician servicing an AC unit on the other side of brand new AC unit. The headline reads avoid AC breakdowns: repair or replaced?

AC Repair Frequency

We would consider it too often if an air conditioner has been needing at least one repair each year. It should be possible to keep your AC system in better shape for many years, so that such frequent repairs would not be needed. AC repairs should be rare, at least for the first several years of a unit’s life. So how can you keep repairs to a minimum?

AC Maintenance

Imagine all the repairs an air conditioner might possibly need during a year of operation. Now imagine that you can eliminate 85% of those. For the entire cooling season, you’ll have an extremely low risk of needing any AC repairs at all. How can you achieve that? With annual AC maintenance, performed by a qualified HVAC technician.

AC maintenance involves cleaning and lubricating the system, inspecting all components, and doing testing of electrical parts, to make sure they’re drawing the correct amount of power and are accurately calibrated. This prevents many potential problems, such as overheating from friction and layers of dust, and catches minor issues, like loose screws or slightly damaged components, before they get bad enough to need serious repair.

But that’s not all! If you’re consistent about getting AC maintenance done every year, your cool comfort will be more even throughout your house, and your air conditioner will operate more efficiently, keeping your energy bills from rising. You’ll even find that your air conditioner can last much longer—ten or twelve years, rather than five or six—thanks to this maintenance.

Breakdown Checklist

What if your air conditioner completely stops working? Well, you still might not need repairs. First, check that the circuit breaker hasn’t been tripped. Sometimes that’s the only problem, perhaps caused by plugging another appliance into the same circuit. Then check that the thermostat hasn’t been accidentally set to the wrong temperature or a vacation programming. This can happen from something as slight as an elbow bump with some thermostats!

Finally, shut off the power to the air conditioner, clean the air filter or replace it with a fresh one, and try turning it on again, in case your only problem is blocked airflow. But if none of these steps help you to find the cause of the breakdown, it’s time for AC repair in Buford, GA. We’re ready to help!
